Nice little list of basic #server #security #tasks https://sollove.com/2013/03/03/my-first-.. In all honesty I have never bothered. Also worth reading the #hackernews #comments https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=294..

*Note to self:* The #coffeespace #server running on #debian 8 was sneakily pre-loaded with a bunch of #ufw #firewall #rules that block access from different ports! It is possible to enable them manually though: https://unixcop.com/how-to-open-ports-in.. What a waste of an hour that was - me thinking I had done something wrong!

Very sad to see #scooby 's #server being #shutdown - he is very unlikely to find a #buyer for #charity at his asking #price https://youtube.com/watch?v=phtGec3FfkU I did not have much success with #custommealplanner - but it is sad to see the #resource vanishing, I know many people *have* found it to be useful.

Nice, #ytoff now handles #embedded #urls - something that was bugging me for a while when I checked out #articles on #backreaction , etc: http://backreaction.blogspot.com/2021/10.. Now it handles that case okay, even making a reasonable attempt at trying to fit inside the little #iframe !
#ytoff currently uses about 50MB under #load - meaning there is absolutely no way it will run on the #coffeespace #server currently... There is still a ways to go.

Nice #blackfriday #offers for #vps https://lowendbox.com/blog/black-friday-.. I'm looking for a #cheap #server to #replace #coffeespace - paying a little too much currently for what I'm getting with #chicagovps !

Successfully #programmed an #invidious #alternative - hopefully now #firefox stops eating my #ram and #cpu #resources . I will continue to test #ytoff #locally until I am confident enough to run it on the #coffeespace #server ... Need to deal with #youtube 's weird #ratelimiting and various other issues. That said, so far it works!
The latest version of #ytoff is insanely #stable - I am now pretty happy with it. Some #bug #fixes are still required of course, but it is getting pretty close now! I believe it will be stable enough to #secretly go #live on my #coffeespace #server pretty soon.

I think this is a misrepresentation of using #differing to reduce #image #size https://www.simplethread.com/why-your-we.. I am currently using this for some large images on the #coffeespace #server in newer #articles and have been quite happy with the results so far. The reason for *not* using #webp or #avif is simply #support for older devices.

Ouch, the #fbi got caught out with crappy #server #programming for #sending out a #confirmation #email - where the #content is #generated #clientside ! https://krebsonsecurity.com/2021/11/hoax.. This is insanely dumb!

*Very interesting* #service being #offered by this #datacentre #server #company https://pi-colocation.com/ You send them your #raspberrypi and then they #host it in their #server #infrastructure - very cool! They even run off of #green #energy ! Would be *very* #tempting to run such a service!

Interesting push by #ubuntu to create #ubuntuframe - a #display #server for #embedded #linux #devices https://assets.ubuntu.com/v1/713b9224-Ub.. Personally I think people are way better off with something else, even writing directly to the #framebuffer ...

I'm starting to wonder about a potential #vps #service that runs a small amount of #server #code when #triggered - where people will want to #interact with the #service because it's #cheap https://lowendbox.com/blog/friendhosting.. I believe the biggest problem will be #disk and #ram - ensuring that each run within a set #limit ...

An interesting #idea is to make #deadsocial #operate entirely #offline - where the #server is not even #required in order to use the #service ... I will have a think on this after my #phd #deadline ! This was always the goal with this #system anyway!

I *really* like the #simplicity of this #elk #project https://github.com/cesanta/elk 20kB of #flash and as little as 100 bytes of #ram is pretty impressive for running #js ! I like how easy it is to #hook into the #clanguage and even #arduino #ide https://github.com/cesanta/elk/blob/mast.. In theory one could quite easily run multiple #apps at the same time if setup correctly! I *really* want to dig into this!
Hell I even like the idea of using this for a #server - each thread gets a #tiny #js #engine powered by #elk to perform some #script ! I think it's a genuinely super powerful idea!

Very interesting idea to have a #free to #browse #website / #webpage in an 0800 like system, where the #server pays the #internet #charge instead of the #user https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2021/09/x-no-da.. The idea is that #essential #services such as #government websites can be accessed even if you have no #internet #data on your #mobile #phone . I really like this thinking, especially as more and more services move online.

I think I need to greatly #reduce the #deadsocial #cache size later, it's too large for the #available #ram I have on this #server ... It's currently using about 5MB out of the dedicated 6.4MB - this could be what's causing the occasional crashing during #builds !
