Apparently 500 #million #user #details have been #leaked from #whatsapp and is so far looking to be true: https://cybernews.com/news/whatsapp-data.. #meta 's #facebook are yet to #disclose the #leak to any of the #users in 84 #countries that use their #service . They should be heavily #fined for knowing and not #disclosing this information to the public.

Back in 2015, prior to #gdpr , #twitter was looking to #sellout their #user 's #data to make #money , by selling very accurate #data to #telco https://twitter.com/stevekrenzel/status/.. Luckily some of the #engineers had a #backbone , but it was a close call.

Heh, looks like #matrix #bridge had a pretty dumb #bug that allowed a #matrix #user to #handcraft a #malicious #message to #run #commands as an #irc #user when #replying https://matrix.org/blog/2022/05/04/0-34-.. Pretty crazy!

Interesting #discussion about #help #options for #programs https://blog.craftyguy.net/cmdline-help/ There is not real #consensus about how to #trigger the #help , probably the best option is to point the #user towards the #help when they do enter a bad #command , on the #stderr #pipe as not to mess up the #stdout #pipe , like #git does.

I tried #kakoune as a potential #vim #alternative and it seems quite nice! https://www.redhat.com/sysadmin/kakoune-.. I will say a few things though: missing #line #select with 'V' kind sucks. I also run `:tabe` a lot for running new tabs, and use 'CTRL+SHIFT+<UP/DOWN>' for #navigation . It does seem to be more #user #friendly though - we worth keeping an eye on!

Damn, a massive #vulnerability in #pkexec in #linux allowing #privilege #escalation from #user to #root ! https://hackaday.com/2022/01/26/major-bu.. Well damn!

Great to see #google 's #amp #project finally #dying https://searchengineland.com/twitter-rol.. It was #google getting too #involved in the #user 's #interaction with #servers / #publishers . It was a #janky #user #experience at best...

Ouch, #robinhood apparently had their #user #accounts #robbed https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/robinh.. This is supposed to affect some 5 million people! At one point I was even considering setting up some #automated #trading #platform with some kind of #library - but ran out of any kind of #money and decided against it. Strange times we live in.

#firefox is now using #darkpatterns to get #user #location #data and share it to #advertisers https://www.theregister.com/2021/10/08/m.. What the hell is going on at #mozilla ? It really feels like they are losing their way...

Awesome, tonnes of people #flocked to #telegram when #facebook was down - 70 #million people in fact! https://www.reuters.com/technology/teleg.. That's a *massive* #user #migration !

Very interesting idea to have a #free to #browse #website / #webpage in an 0800 like system, where the #server pays the #internet #charge instead of the #user https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2021/09/x-no-da.. The idea is that #essential #services such as #government websites can be accessed even if you have no #internet #data on your #mobile #phone . I really like this thinking, especially as more and more services move online.

Very cool work on #audio #compression https://ai.googleblog.com/2021/08/sounds.. I had an idea a while back about training an #audio #profile per #user and then pre-sending this to each client, which essentially then just performs #tts on the other end. Using this method, you could then communicate over something like #lora with ultra-low #bandwidth ...

Yeah... #deadsocial is 100% vulnerable to #csrf https://simonwillison.net/2021/Aug/3/sam.. I have a better solution for this problem though, where every requested page whilst logged in also sends a #random #token per #form that needs to be sent back with the #user #session #cookie . The reason for not using #http #headers is that not *every* browser supports them.
