Wow, the #serial checking of #microsoft #windows 95 was super simple: https://youtube.com/watch?v=cwyH59nACzQ Even without the assumption of the internet, back then you could have easily implemented some custom key based on a #serial #number baked into the #disk ... They were just super lazy, maybe a rushed product launch or something.

Wow, #tiny 11 is a #windows 11 #os #install that uses just 2GB of #ram and 8GB of #disk space: https://www.tomshardware.com/news/tiny11.. The crappy thing is that #windows #xp uses to use 64MB of #ram and a comparably small amount of #disk space. It is completely out of control.

Apparently #google #users will get a #free #upgrade from 15GB to 1TB #disk #space in the #cloud https://lowendbox.com/blog/google-is-upg.. I can't confirm if this applies to #email and #google #drive .

Not to self, #deadsocial should #save #login #sessions to #disk and try to bring them back after a #restart - it is incredibly annoying to have to #login all of the time! Maybe I look into this for the next #version ...

I very much agree that #flatpak and #snap are not the #future for #package #management https://ludocode.com/blog/flatpak-is-not.. So many issues, including extreme #disk #space use!

Interesting move by #seagate to bring the #nvme #interface to the #harddrive #disk https://www.pcmag.com/news/seagate-creat.. I imagine this is ensuring their #products remain #relevant in the #evolving #market which has switched largely towards #ssd #solidstatedrive ...

Interesting, a #database #search #query can cause a #write to #disk in some corner cases, especially if #working #memory is limited: https://www.mutuallyhuman.com/blog/how-a.. Definitely worth knowing such a thing!

I'm starting to wonder about a potential #vps #service that runs a small amount of #server #code when #triggered - where people will want to #interact with the #service because it's #cheap https://lowendbox.com/blog/friendhosting.. I believe the biggest problem will be #disk and #ram - ensuring that each run within a set #limit ...

Woah, the location of a #swap #file on #disk affects how fast it is: https://www.vidarholen.net/contents/blog.. This is of course just the natural physics of the disk, but a very painful reality.

Interesting #discussion on #vps #cpu time #steal https://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/17.. I have often wondered a few times about potentially setting up my own, perhaps specifically to #compute for the #jvm in some safe way. It could end up incredibly cheap if all that is deployed is a #jar file, it uses limited #disk and has a #network connection... Remove #dynamic #memory #allocation and things could get super interesting!

Very, very impressive #hobbyos called #essence https://essence.handmade.network/ It's #opensource and supports a decent number of #features including #disk #audio #gpu #usb #network and much more: https://gitlab.com/nakst/essence The #design is also very nice - an extremely impressive #os !
