#amd have just released a 32 bit #riscv #cpu - very #outoftheblue https://www.xilinx.com/products/design-t.. Apparently it is because they #purchased #xilinx and #microblaze is a 20 year old #architecture from them.
Pretty interesting. The #cpu #speculative #computing that #intel and #amd had *massive* #security #issues with recently seems to be #redundant with some better #designed #cpu #architecture that better handles some #edgecases https://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/academic/c.. This could be a way forward for both #companies , and potentially something for #arm to look at!
Interesting, so some #amd #ryzen #ram #ecc #error #correction #modules were able to detect #errors , but not actually #correct them 80/19 times on a #server https://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/anton/.. Very interesting indeed.
Hmm, #intel #purposefully acting very #shady by #crippling the #performance of #amd #cpu when using the #intel #compiler https://www.agner.org/forum/viewtopic.ph..
Wow, #intel and #stealing the #ip of #amd in their #latest #patent https://twitter.com/Underfox3/status/151.. It's #undeniable when you #compare the #diagrams ... How insane it was ever granted. The #patent system is completely screwed.
Looks like a *massive* #amd #zen #security #issue of the scale of #meltdown and #spectre is incoming: https://grsecurity.net/amd_branch_mispre.. Damn! It just keeps getting worse, it looks like no #cpu #manufacturer seems to be able to actually #design a working CPU...
Interesting #discussion about maximizing #ram #bandwidth https://unum.cloud/post/2022-01-29-ddr4/ As the #hackernews #comments point out, with a #amd #threadripper #cpu you need to have your code #numa aware: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=301.. This means delegating a task to a specific #core and #ram to minimize #throttling the #infinityfabric .
People performing their own #ram #upgrade on their #gpu just screams that the #industry needs to allow for #replacement #ram to be #installed https://hackaday.com/2022/01/30/gpu-ram-.. For #amd or #nvidia it would also mean only needing to #manufacture one #pcb and #bom too!
Looks like #amd - jealous of #intel 's #ime #backdoor #security #flaws - went out and created their own: https://hackaday.com/2021/10/01/flaw-in-.. The #amd #ryzen #platformsecurityprocessor #psp apparently gives #low #privilege #processes the ability to #access #uninitialised #memory - which could #leak #secrets ...
Looks like #intel are now starting to #embrace the #chiplet #design #amd have been leading with for so long: https://www.eetimes.com/intel-brings-chi.. It was the right way to go all along, especially as #silicon #manufacturing is becoming less #reliable and #yields are much lower!
*Finally* a #cpu #manufacturer is taking #linux more seriously: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n.. Good on #amd for finally seeing the rise of Linux as a good thing, now being the #backbone for #phones , #servers , #desktops , #embedded systems and now #gaming ... We need #silicon that we can easily write #drivers for, so that we can support your random CPU features.
Very nice #desktop setup: https://jcs.org/2021/07/19/desktop Not sure about running #netbsd - but the #amd #cpu in there on a #fanless design is pretty cool (literally).
Things must be bad, #amd are going to #recycle old #xbox parts: https://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-la..
The #intel #spectre mitigations for their crappy #cpu design are causing all sorts of optimization problems: https://robert.ocallahan.org/2021/06/spe.. The 'solution' is to execute *more* instructions in #userspace as there is a serious cost for each #systemcall ! Intel are really being punished for this now thought, as I posted recently #amd is eating their lunch because of this.
Interesting, #amd are looking to replace #intel 's X86 #cpu #architecture https://www.extremetech.com/computing/32.. Apparently it boils down to just being another #biglittle design, but is still pretty exciting.
