And the #chip #shortage is now really affecting up-and-coming #hardware #devices - now in the #retro #games #consoles #industry https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2021/11/p..

Just watching a #review of the #jingpad #linux #tablet running #jingos - the #hardware actually materialized and it seems to be pretty okay. The #software apparently needs some work - but for the most part it seems like a solid little device. Definitely much better than #pine 's #pinetab which is *painfully* #slow . I'm hoping they might release a #pinetabpro so I can replace the internal board on mine with something better, but it might be #incompatible ...

Man, imagine #buying a #brandnew #samsung #tv only to have the #display taken over by #ads ! https://twitter.com/samsunguk/status/145.. Madness. You either own the #hardware or not. We want #dumb #tvs - not #smart TVs!

There is a #reserved #respect for #hardware #hackers and the #debugging #process they go through on the #regular in order to find new #attack #vectors https://twitter.com/SecurityJon/status/1.. #security really is quite tough!

Very interesting, as I expected - it looks like some #raspberrypi 's are still going after 5 years in #space #orbit - meaning that #commercial #hardware is a lot more #robust to #radiation than was made out... https://hackaday.com/2021/09/22/astro-pi.. They are even looking to add *more* of them given the #success of the existing Raspberry Pi's.

It'll cost about $150 for #amazon 's new #paperwhite #eink #display https://www.theverge.com/2021/9/21/22684.. The only thing I wish is that it is #opensource - but that of course is completely against Amazon's goal of controlling the #software and #hardware stack to prevent #bypass of their #store ...

I've been there hacking #hardware way beyond what it is supposed to support: https://hackaday.com/2021/09/15/laptop-g.. I am currently even writing a #article for #coffeespace for #keyboardrepair !

Another set of #opensource #hardware #lowtech #ar #goggles https://hackaday.com/2021/09/02/a-microc.. I want a #devkit ! Get them in the hands of #hackers to write #software for!

Great #article on #hackaday about #pine 's #pinephone and reasonable #expectations https://hackaday.com/2021/09/02/pining-f.. What's interesting about this is that just this morning I was reading on the #forum about some #unreasonable expectations some how with the #hardware and #software https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?.. My biggest concern for Pine64 was actually that they do not manage expectations so well. I see the same mistake happening with the #pinenote !

#apple being hit by the #chipshortage - and they were sending out #rumours that it was done with now: https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Technol.. So much for it being over... #pine have done pretty well to keep #shipping their #hardware !

Wow, an #apple #macbook doesn't even sound like they have nice #hardware these days: https://pqvst.com/2021/08/24/my-macbook-.. For #premium hardware I would expect not to have it repaired for at least 5 years (if I don't do anything crazy).

Just a few days ago somebody replicated the #apple #csam #detection #algorithm https://github.com/AsuharietYgvar/AppleN.. Just now, somebody has successfully produced a #hash #collision - *exactly* what people were concerned about: https://github.com/AsuharietYgvar/AppleN.. Apparently it's even worse that this - different #hardware generates a different hash because of #float #precision ...

A *very* glowing review of #jingos running on the #jingpad https://tuxphones.com/jingpad-a1-linux-t.. I'm genuinely impressed, I was initially extremely #sceptical that a new player would come in and do such a great job. They must have a serious #hardware and #software team behind this project!

This is an incredible #pine #cluster #board #debug exercise: https://ericdraken.com/a64-reset-problem.. The solution turns out to be a #diode #hardware revision. I *really* like the idea of documenting the debug process to this level - what a seriously impressive piece of work. I remember seeing this guy talking in #irc about his problems.

Looks like #apple have their first M1 related #hardware #fault https://www.frontpagetech.com/2021/07/30.. Apparently users are leaving the lids down on their machines overnight and then discovering the next day that the display has cracked. I personally suspect this could be related to #heatcycling the #display rapidly...

Good point about keeping old #hardware going longer, specifically #laptops https://cheapskatesguide.org/articles/de.. The article claims that the humble #cpu will double speed again in something like 16 years! Looks like the bottom of the CPU market is about to fall out.
