The #pocketpc ( #popcorn #computer ) is interesting, but not for $300-$400 #usd https://www.cnx-software.com/2021/10/01/.. If it was about the $100 mark I would be able to better #justify it. It's based on the #arm #allwinner A64 #cpu - hopefully that means some more #kernel #developers for #pine 's #pinephone and #pinetab !
The #pine #pinetab was a super pain in the arse to #setup with #wifi just now, I should have tested which #drivers needed to be #blacklisted since I blanket installed everything. My bad. Got it working now and using 'reasonable' amounts of #ram and #cpu ...
Nice, it seems like the #kernel is taking #portable #arm #computers quite seriously, even asking for more devices to be supported: https://tuxphones.com/linux-kernel-needs.. It seems clear at this point that #arm and other #lowpower #cpu #architectures will play a large part in the future.
Have a crazy #idea to turn #pine 's #pinecube into a #pda device: https://www.pine64.org/cube/ Looking at the #specs it sports a small #arm #cpu 800MHz, 128 MB #ram , a #touchscreen #display and #wifi https://wiki.pine64.org/index.php/PineCu.. This could very well end up as a very nice #hardware base!
Interesting #discussion on #vps #cpu time #steal https://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/17.. I have often wondered a few times about potentially setting up my own, perhaps specifically to #compute for the #jvm in some safe way. It could end up incredibly cheap if all that is deployed is a #jar file, it uses limited #disk and has a #network connection... Remove #dynamic #memory #allocation and things could get super interesting!
Weird to see that even in #retrospect we still can't really undertand #intel 's decision making: https://dfarq.homeip.net/286-vs-386sx/ I have personally spent a considerable amount of time coding for the 386 #cpu #architecture - I personally quite like it.
Huh, it never even occurred to me that a #modulo was an expensive #cpu #instruction https://lemire.me/blog/2016/06/27/a-fast.. I always thought of it as a cheap #operation - no wonder some of my programs were slower than I would like. Especially for #vision #processing and #neural #networks ... Hell, even #deadsocial likely uses more than its fair share! I actually want to do some tests on this!
I don't know too much about #simd - but it's interesting to hear the #negatives https://www.bitsnbites.eu/three-fundamen.. It would be good to see speed comparisons between #simd and #vector #processing in a #cpu ...
Great #article by #danct 12 about how to #overclock the #pinephone and presumably the #pinetab and all A64 #arm #cpu https://danct12.github.io/PinePhone-CPU-.. Would be good to abstract this and slide a small #heatsink into the #pinetab !
*Finally* a #cpu #manufacturer is taking #linux more seriously: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n.. Good on #amd for finally seeing the rise of Linux as a good thing, now being the #backbone for #phones , #servers , #desktops , #embedded systems and now #gaming ... We need #silicon that we can easily write #drivers for, so that we can support your random CPU features.
#intel is talking about 3nm #cpu #transistors and they haven't yet cracked 7nm https://www.anandtech.com/show/16823/int.. They are being very ambitious for sure.
Very nice #desktop setup: https://jcs.org/2021/07/19/desktop Not sure about running #netbsd - but the #amd #cpu in there on a #fanless design is pretty cool (literally).
Very interesting discussion about #branch #prediction https://lemire.me/blog/2021/07/14/faster.. #mispredicted #branches cost a lot of time on the #cpu and and can cause the entire #pipeline to be invalidated in some edge cases.
Seems like #apple building a better M2 #cpu will be a significant undertaking, just due to how good that #chip already is: https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/202x/.. I genuinely impressed with how good it is for a first attempt, well done to them - seriously!
#intel #cpu 's experiencing yet another slowdown as a result of a bug: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n.. If this keeps happening, these processors will be no better than a calculator.
Apparently the new #windows 11 will only support 8th generation #intel #cpu or higher: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows.. I suspect this might be in part a deal with #intel to force people to upgrade their #cpu despite no real need to do so.
