Ouch, seems quite 'easy' for a #hacker to gain access to a company #network if they are so inclined with the use of a #stolen #laptop https://dolosgroup.io/blog/2021/7/9/from.. Apparently the most effective defence against this is an #encrypted #drive ... More needs to be done in general to defend against such attacks, but #governments seem to be entirely against #encryption for exactly the reason that it makes these devices harder to #hack !

#naomiwu has done a review of the new #notebook A1 by #banggood https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7u7lZQQZ.. Very interesting device that nobody really saw coming: https://www.banggood.com/custlink/GmvRgm.. I am a massive fan of the #formfactor of the #laptop - I was really bummed out when the #notebook and #netbook originally died, then got rebooted as a #chromebook ... This machine appears to be aimed at #hackers and #engineers which is pretty cool!

And this again outlines why I don't want a #os from the likes of #google on my #laptop https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/07/.. Whilst this could happen on an #opensource #os like #linux (which #chromeos is based on) - the idea is that Linux undergoes a better review process and gets a staggered release of the #kernel as different #distributions pull in the latest changes.

Awesome, the new #framework #laptop just #shipped and it's getting great #reviews https://frame.work/blog/the-framework-la.. It's still unfortunately outside of my #budget - but seems like a great little machine, especially given the advocacy for #righttorepair ! Hopefully this machine is a standard for future #opensource devices!

This #keyboard #pcb #generator is very cool and I very seriously considered using it: https://hackaday.com/2021/07/12/3d-print.. I did choose to buy one in the end though, building a custom keyboard *and* #laptop seems far too ambitious! The #chunkboipro will sport an SK61 optical switch #mechanical #keyboard: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/10050019..

Thinking to write a #blog over on the #coffeespace page about the new #laptop I am working on, possibly doing a #buildlog over there. Should be a very interesting project, also seems quite viable too!

This #laptop is getting slower and slower... I suspect in part it could be a #temperature issue - as cooling down the #gpu allowed it to start the other day... I've just manually turned on the fans and now it is already starting to run faster... I suspect this machine is not longed for this world.

Just purchased that #parts for the #custom #laptop - $200 later! On the plus side the #display can be used as a stand-alone #monitor and the #keyboard was needed anyway. Fingers crossed this works.

Seems my #gpu issues may be related to #overheating - this #laptop is really on its last legs.

Progress is slowly being made on designing a new #laptop - I hope to begin #printing the #prototype design very soon!

Really nice #linux #setup that reminds me of #xp days: https://raymii.org/s/blog/Using_IceWM_an.. I may replicate this for the new #laptop I'm designing!

I'm in the market for a new #laptop - but I now want a #dailydriver that is #upgradeable , #opensource and #repairable ... I've had a look at what's out there and I'm not that impressed. I essentially want an #sbc in a box with a #battery , #display and #keyboard - ideally with a rigid chassis. I've got no idea what to do though...

I'm thinking that I should write a #blog later on #coffeespace about the shit I just went through with my #laptop and #ubuntu - what a serious pain it was. Hopefully what I learned can help somebody out there.

I've always wanted to #recycle old #laptop #displays - they are usually really nice quality and in good working condition even if the laptop is dead: https://hackaday.com/2021/06/11/recyclin.. The other thing is that you can usually pick them up for nothing, as the laptop is considered dead and worthless.

Great look at the new #pinephone #keyboard by #pine https://xnux.eu/log/#036 Seems to have come out really nicely, reminds me of an old #laptop keyboard, like my #ibm #thinkpad machine. Very impressive to have such a thing on a #phone !
