Really great point about how crap #modern #os #platforms have become: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=364.. #gui #applications used to run in milliseconds, now we wait for several seconds, despite #computation being orders of magnitude greater.
I like thos #article https://gynvael.coldwind.pl/?lang=en&id=.. I had this #idea many years ago for testing #hidden #directories on #webservers too. I imagine it would work best if you are on the same #network (i.e. same #cloud ). I also wondered if the #computation of a #hash #reveals any #bits of #information about whether it is the correct #hash or not.
I really want to #revisist the #superpermutations #problem https://groups.google.com/g/superpermuta.. I may ask a #university to #devote some serious #computation #resources as we seriously know very little about the #problem #space , only having #solutions for small values of N. I believe finding #symmetric #patterns could be a #feasible way of #drastically #reducing the #resource #requirements .
Heh #intel finally #releases a #cpu in a #laptop that has better #computation than #apple 's M1 Max: https://www.macworld.com/article/608396/.. #caveat : It's ludicrously #expensive , uses double the #power - and for all that only just about edges out the #competition ... In reality this is a massive loss for #intel . It shows they are incapable of competing currently...
#cloudflare just being outright called out by #fastly on their #edge #computation #benchmarks https://www.fastly.com/blog/debunking-cl.. Bare in mind, #cloudflare has actively #hostile #business practices...
When I get back to the #uk I'll be looking to build my own #cluster https://www.pine64.org/2021/09/01/cluste.. This would ultimately save on having to #buy #cloud #computation and could be used to host a series of other tasks, including #storage - #backup - #vpn and even third parties. It could even be setup to replace the need for a #powerful #desktop #machine , simply spinning up computation as required.
Very cool #weather #station using an #espressif #esp 8266: https://hackaday.com/2021/08/23/nothing-.. In the future I want to build out a tonne of these little connected #iot devices with #displays - I imagine it could be an awesome way to get #notifications around your house for example, or control some global properties. They also offer a fair amount of #computation and could be even smarter given a chance to do some #distributed #computation !
Insanely cool project driving 6 #vga #displays from a single #esp 32 ! https://hackaday.com/2021/08/18/running-.. It appears to use a #dma #buffer meaning that the main core(s) are left entirely free for other #computation !
@barray on Sun Aug 01 07:52:31 UTC 2021 said: &eBut here's my prediction anyway: We are insanely far away from anything even remotely as #intelligent as humans in #ai - and given how we're hitting some very serious #bottlenecks in #computation - I suspect it will remain that way for quite some time. When the time does one day come where machines are more intelligent than humans, I suspect they will just leave the planet. It's far less risky and resource intensive to simply go somewhere else.Been a while since I checked out the #amazingatheist - and now I know why: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iLAs7qJ.. Whilst some of the discussion on #ai is interesting, he goes full "seize the means of production" half way through the video. #communism never made anything better and #capitalism is not the source of all your worries. I think if we know one thing about predicting the future, it's that we are terrible at it.
Okay, this is very cool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pv26QAOc.. Zero #computation #processing #fractals ! You can even try this yourself: https://codeparade.itch.io/webcam-fracta..
