This problem of #delayed #memory #allocation bit me years ago: https://lemire.me/blog/2021/10/27/in-c-h.. *Apparently* - if #linux fails to #allocate #memory it should return #null - but this is not true at all. Worse still, #free 'ing memory can also be delayed!
